From medieval times onwards parish priests had the right to claim a tithe (one-tenth) of annual agricultural produce. Tithes in kind were commuted into fixed rent-charges under an Act of Parliament in1836.
The large scale plans and surveys of parishes, drawn to facilitate apportionment of money payments, can be used in conjunction with census records to locate houses, lands and industrial premises owned or occupied by parishioners. Tithe records are deposited in parish chests, county record offices or the National Archives.
The 1838 Tithe map and schedule for West Grimstead are deposited at Wiltshire Record Office. They are in extremely good condition, but because of the size of the map and because it has been encased it a plastic covering to protect it, it is difficult to reproduce so I am only able to display small portions of this map. The following is a transcript of the landowners, occupiers and map numbers on the schedule. The original schedule also lists the acreage and the tithes due.
